KEY TAKEAWAY

The Health app on iPad records very little itself: your Apple Watch pairs with your iPhone, and the iPad gets a copy through iCloud. If it is empty or behind, check that Sync with iPad and Sync with iPhone are both on, that both devices use the same Apple Account, and that both are online and up to date. Never delete data on the iPad to reset it: deletions sync to every device.

You open the Health app on your iPad and it is empty, or it stops at last Tuesday while your iPhone shows everything up to this morning. Nothing is broken, and your data is not lost. The iPad collects almost none of your health data itself: it receives a copy from your iPhone through iCloud, and when that copy is missing or late, the cause is nearly always one of four things.

The short version: Health sync is switched off on one of the two devices, the devices are signed in to different Apple Accounts, one of them is offline or out of date, or the iPhone simply has not uploaded the latest data yet. Each takes a minute to check, in that order.

Why is my health data not showing on my iPad?

Because of where the data starts. Your Apple Watch pairs with your iPhone, not with your iPad, so steps, heart rate, workouts and sleep all land on the iPhone first. Apple describes the Health app as a store for information from iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, plus compatible apps and devices, but on an iPad most of that arrives second hand.

The iPad does record a few things directly. Apple lists headphone audio levels from connected AirPods or other headphones, health records you download from supported providers, and data from Bluetooth devices such as a blood pressure monitor or a scale, as long as they are paired with the iPad. Everything your watch measures has to travel: watch to iPhone, iPhone to iCloud, iCloud to iPad. A gap at any of those three steps leaves the iPad looking empty.

It also helps to know that Health on iPad is recent. It arrived with iPadOS 17 in September 2023, so an iPad that cannot run iPadOS 17 has no Health app at all.

How do I turn on Health sync between iPhone and iPad?

On the iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud. Tap Show All, then Health, and make sure Sync with iPad is on. Then do the same on the iPhone, where the switch is called Sync with iPhone. Both have to be on: the iPhone has to send and the iPad has to receive. Menu labels move a little between versions, so if you do not see Show All, look for Saved to iCloud, then See All.

Apple's own requirements for the sync are short. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account, connected to the internet, and updated to the latest OS version. The account check catches more people than you would expect, typically a family iPad signed in to someone else's Apple Account. Look at the name at the top of Settings on both devices before anything else.

Why is my iPad showing old data?

If the iPad has some data but stops days ago, sync is on and the copy is just behind. Apple does not publish how often Health syncs, and the iPad can only receive what the iPhone has already uploaded. So start with the iPhone: unlock it, open the Health app, and leave it on Wi-Fi for a while, ideally charging. Then open Health on the iPad and give it a few minutes.

A watch that was not worn overnight will not fill the gap, of course. If last night is missing on the iPhone too, the problem is upstream, and our guide to wearing your watch to sleep covers the settings that decide whether a night gets recorded at all.

What if sync is on and the iPad is still empty?

Work through it in this order. Update both devices to the latest iOS and iPadOS. Restart both. Then turn Sync with iPad off on the iPad, wait a minute, and turn it back on, which makes the iPad ask iCloud for its copy again. Do this on the iPad only, so the iPhone keeps uploading in the meantime.

One thing not to do: do not delete data on the iPad to force a fresh start. Deleting Health data on one device removes it from every synced device on the same iCloud account, according to Apple, so clearing the iPad also clears the iPhone. If nothing above works, Apple Support can look at the account itself.

Why does an app show my data on iPhone but not on iPad?

An app reads Health on the device it is running on. On the iPad it reads the iPad's copy of Health, and it needs its own permission there, which you grant the first time you open it on that iPad. If you said no, or skipped the prompt, open the Health app on the iPad, tap your profile picture, then Apps, choose the app and switch on what it should read. And if the iPad's copy of Health is behind, every app on the iPad will be behind with it.

FitWoody is an iOS app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch that turns the data your watch already collects into a clear read on how your body is doing: sleep, metabolic baselines, training load. It reads Apple Health on each device where you use it, and it also keeps what it has read in sync across the devices where you sign in to your FitWoody account. So a night your iPhone already imported can show up in FitWoody on the iPad even while the iPad's own copy of Health is still catching up. The fix for an empty Health app is still the iCloud setting above, but the app does not have to wait for it.

Does the iPad record any health data on its own?

A little. Besides headphone audio levels and downloaded health records, you can add data by hand on the iPad, such as medications, cycle information or body measurements, and it syncs back to the iPhone the same way. If you use a sleep schedule on the iPhone, its time in bed shows up in the Sleep category on the iPad too, which is a good moment to learn what a normal night actually looks like on the chart.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Health app on my iPad empty?

Usually because Health sync is off on the iPad or the iPhone, or the two devices use different Apple Accounts. The iPad records very little on its own, so without iCloud sync there is almost nothing to show. Turn on Sync with iPad and Sync with iPhone in iCloud settings on each device.

How long does Health take to sync from iPhone to iPad?

Apple does not publish a sync interval. The iPad can only receive what the iPhone has already uploaded, so open Health on the iPhone with it unlocked and online, then open Health on the iPad and give it a few minutes.

Can I pair my Apple Watch with my iPad?

No. Apple Watch pairs only with iPhone. Its data reaches the iPad through iCloud, after it has synced to the iPhone.
