KEY TAKEAWAY

The 2027 Barcelona Marathon is on Sunday, March 14, on a flat, fully urban course. From late October you have about 20 weeks: plan a lighter holiday week, peak in February, treat the February 14 half marathon as a training run rather than an all-out race, and hold effort, not pace, along the seafront.

To train for the Barcelona Marathon, plan a winter block of about 20 weeks that peaks in February, and decide early what to do with the city's half marathon, which falls exactly four weeks before race day. The 2027 Zurich Marató de Barcelona is on Sunday, March 14, on a course the organizers describe as urban, flat and fast. What catches people out is the calendar, and a stretch of seafront late in the race.

Barcelona shares a lot with the other flat Spanish city marathons. If you have read our guide to training for the Seville Marathon, the winter block will feel familiar, and the advice there on turning a half marathon time into a realistic marathon goal applies here unchanged. What is specific to Barcelona is a March date that pushes your hardest weeks into February, a half marathon right where your peak should be, and an exposed coastal section late in the race.

When is the 2027 Barcelona Marathon, and what are the key rules?

Checked on October 20, 2026, against the organizers' 2027 regulations and course page. The race is on Sunday, March 14, 2027. Wheelchair athletes start at 8:25 and the main race at 8:30, from Passeig de Gràcia, with start times staggered by the pace you gave at registration to avoid crowding. The course is 42.195 km, entirely urban, and certified by World Athletics, the Spanish athletics federation (RFEA) and the Catalan federation (FCA).

The time limit is 6 hours, counted from when the last runner crosses the start line, and the race closes at 4:00 p.m. Drinks stations are planned roughly every 2.5 km from kilometer 5 to kilometer 40, with food at the finish. Pacers will run at seven target times: 2:45, 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00 and 4:30. You must be 18 on race day.

Entry is capped at 37,000 runners and closes on March 7, 2027, or earlier if the cap is reached. You choose your start box when you register and can change it until February 1, 2027. Bibs are collected in person at the Expo Sports on Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13, from 9:00 to 20:00, with a Thursday session listed but not yet timed. There is no bib collection on race day, and the expo venue had not been announced when we checked.

How many weeks do you have, and where do they go?

From late October you have about 20 weeks, which is enough time for a full marathon block if you already run regularly. A sensible shape is four to six weeks of easy base running into early December, around ten weeks of marathon-specific building through December, January and February, and a taper of two to three weeks before March 14.

Count backwards and the catch appears. Christmas falls about eleven weeks before the race, inside the building phase, and your longest runs land in February. Plan a lighter week over the holidays instead of pretending you will train straight through them. A lighter week you planned costs far less than a fortnight you lose in January to a cold or a routine that quietly stalled.

Through the base weeks, keep most of your running easy. Why most of your runs should feel easy sets out the evidence; in practice it means reaching February with legs that can absorb the hardest weeks, rather than legs that are already tired. If you start this block from very little running, 20 weeks is still workable, but add volume gradually and let the long run grow in small steps. Expect at least one cold between December and February, and when it comes, skip the missed sessions rather than cramming them into the next week.

Should you race the Barcelona Half Marathon four weeks before the marathon?

You can run it, but racing it flat out is a gamble. The 2027 Barcelona Half Marathon is on Sunday, February 14, exactly four weeks before the marathon. That puts it in the middle of your peak weeks, just before the taper, which is the worst moment to spend several days recovering from a race effort.

A lower-risk option is to treat it as a long training run with a section at your goal marathon pace, run inside a crowd with drinks stations already set up. You get the rehearsal (the early start, the breakfast, the gels, the shoes) without paying for an all-out 21 km in the weeks that matter most.

If you do race it, read the result honestly. A good half marathon tells you what your fitness can do for 21 km, not what it will do for 42, and the usual conversion formulas tend to be optimistic for the marathon, as the Seville guide explains. Whichever you choose, decide in December, not on the start line, and build the weeks around that decision.

What does the seafront stretch mean for your pacing?

It means planning to work harder there for the same pace, or to accept a slower pace for the same effort. On the most recent course map on the organizers' site, drawn for the 2026 edition, the route reaches the coast at Port Olímpic and follows Avinguda del Litoral toward Parc del Fòrum from roughly kilometer 27 to 30, before turning back into the city along Diagonal. That is open ground by the sea, when your reserves are lowest.

Wind is why it matters. In a classic set of measurements, the physiologist Griffith Pugh found that the oxygen cost of running into a wind rose with the square of the wind speed. A light breeze barely registers; a strong one costs far more than twice as much as a moderate one.

The same paper points to the fix. Running about a meter behind another runner virtually eliminated air resistance and cut oxygen use by 6.5% in Pugh's tests. Those were at middle-distance speed, faster than most marathoners run, so the saving at marathon pace is smaller, but it points the same way. With 35 pacers on course, the simplest plan for a breezy day is to be inside a group when you reach the sea, not alone ten meters ahead of it.

On your watch, a headwind shows up as a rising heart rate at a steady pace, or a falling pace at a steady heart rate. Decide beforehand which one you will hold. Holding effort through the exposed section and taking back a little time once you turn into the streets is usually cheaper than fighting the wind to protect a split.

What will mid-March weather in Barcelona be like?

Usually mild, and mild is not the same as cool. Long-term March averages at Barcelona Airport, the reference station of Spain's national weather agency, are a daily low of 7.4 °C and a daily high of 16.1 °C, with relative humidity around 70%. The 8:30 start is normally comfortable, but the staggered waves mean slower runners start later and finish around midday, with the sun higher and the temperature still climbing.

After a winter of training in the cold, a sunny 16 °C can feel warmer than the number suggests. If the forecast is sunny and still, start a little slower than the pace you trained at in January; if it is cool and overcast, you have the conditions the course was designed for.

What should race week look like in Barcelona?

Calm, familiar and mostly off your feet. If you are travelling, arrive by Friday so you can collect your bib on the 12th and keep Saturday quiet; walking a big fair the day before a marathon costs more energy than it seems. Check your start box and wave, since the staggered start means you may cross the line well after 8:30.

Rehearse race morning in your last long runs: the same breakfast, the same shoes, and gels at roughly the spacing of the course's drinks stations. The taper will make you feel restless and sometimes heavy. That flat, sluggish feeling in the last two weeks is normal, and it is not lost fitness.

FitWoody is an iOS app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch that turns your watch data into a clear read on how your body is doing. For a 20-week block like this one, the useful parts today are training load tracked against your own baseline, cardiac load that scores each run by what it cost you internally (so a windy long run along the coast reads as the harder session it was), custom heart rate zones, and recovery baselines built from HRV, resting heart rate and sleep. Flyover replays a run along its route with your heart rate and pace, so you can see exactly where a run got hard. An Apple Watch is required, and FitWoody informs rather than diagnoses.

Barcelona rewards a patient plan: a winter of mostly easy running, a clear decision about the February half, and enough sense on the day to let the weather and the wind set your effort on the seafront, not the pace screen on your wrist.
