KEY TAKEAWAY
The 2026 Valencia Marathon is on Sunday, December 6, on a flat course at sea level. Because there are no hills to slow you down, the biggest risk is starting too fast, so train goal pace inside your long runs, aim for even splits, taper for two to three weeks and start slower if race day turns warm.
To train for the Valencia Marathon, train for even splits. The course is flat and at sea level, so nothing on the road will slow you down except the pace you chose at the start. The 2026 race is on Sunday, December 6. With two months or so to go, your job is to rehearse goal pace, practice fueling and arrive fresh.
That sounds easy, and it is exactly why Valencia catches people out. A course with no hills gives you no natural brakes, so a runner who feels great at kilometer 8 can spend thirty kilometers paying for it.
When is the 2026 Valencia Marathon, and what are the key rules?
Checked on September 24, 2026, against the race organizers' website and 2026 regulations. The 46th edition is on Sunday, December 6, 2026, over the standard marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers. It starts at Plaça de la Marató and finishes on the footbridge over the water at the City of Arts and Sciences. The organizers describe the route as completely flat and at sea level.
The first wave leaves at 8:15 a.m. and the regulations list nine waves, the last at 9:35 a.m., assigned by your accredited time. The time limit is 5 hours 30 minutes from the moment you cross the start line, and runners who reach kilometer 25 after 12:57 p.m. must leave the course. Drink stations are listed at roughly kilometers 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, 35, 37.5 and 40, plus one at the finish. Bibs are handed out only at the expo on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the race, never on race morning.
Entry for 2026 is sold out. The 36,000 bibs went through a loyalty period and a ballot, and the waiting list is not taking new names. If you are not in, this guide is really about 2027.
Why does a flat, fast course punish a bad pacing plan?
Because on a flat course the only variable is you. There is no climb to force you to ease off early, and cool December air makes a pace that is slightly too fast feel comfortable for a long time. The cost arrives late, as glycogen runs low, and on a flat road there is nowhere to hide it.
The numbers on late-race collapse are sobering. An analysis of more than four million marathon records defined hitting the wall as a sustained, significant slowdown late in the race and found that 28% of men and 17% of women hit the wall, and those who did slowed by around 40% against their earlier pace. The same study found that slowdowns were more common in the years around a personal best, which is precisely when people sign up for a race like Valencia.
The fix is not caution for its own sake. It is choosing a pace your training actually supports, then holding it without drama in the first half. A negative split at Valencia is not a sign you started too slow. On this course it is usually a sign you raced well.

What should your last two months look like?
Several more weeks of building, then a taper of two to three weeks. The building weeks carry your longest runs and the marathon-pace work. The taper cuts volume while keeping a little speed, so your legs feel sharp on December 6. Nothing you add in the last ten days will make you fitter.
In the building weeks, put goal pace inside your long runs rather than running them all easy. A block of marathon pace in the second half of a long run teaches you what that pace feels like on tired legs, which is the only version of it that matters in Valencia. Keep the other runs easy enough that you can do this well. Your training load against your own baseline should climb gently through these weeks and then drop once the taper starts.
If a cold or a busy month has cost you time, resist the urge to catch up. A goal pace built on the training you did beats a goal pace built on the training you planned. Adjust the target now, not at kilometer 30. If you are also entered in the organizers' half marathon on October 25, six weeks out, use it as a dress rehearsal at controlled effort rather than an all-out race.
How do you train for even splits?
Practice holding one pace on flat ground until it becomes boring. Pick a flat loop or a running track, run your marathon-pace blocks there, and check your splits afterwards rather than during. You are learning to feel the pace, so the watch confirms it rather than dictates it.
Work out the numbers once. A four-hour goal is about 5:41 per kilometer and a halfway split of about two hours. Plan to go through halfway at that time or slightly slower, never faster. In training, rehearse the start too: the first two or three kilometers of a long run at goal pace while everyone around you would be surging.
Use heart rate as a guardrail, not a steering wheel. On a flat course heart rate drifts upward over time at the same pace, so a small rise after halfway is expected. A big jump in the first 10K is the warning. Setting heart rate zones from your own tests before race week gives you a ceiling that fits your body instead of a formula.
What is December weather like for the Valencia Marathon?
Usually cool and kind to marathoners, but not guaranteed. The organizers describe the race's temperature as ideal, between 12 and 17 degrees Celsius. Research on weather and marathon times supports why that matters: performance slows progressively as heat stress rises, and slower runners are affected more than elite ones.
In a study of seven marathons over decades of results, top men ran 1.7% slower than the course record in the coolest conditions and 4.5% slower in the warmest. The practical point for you is the wave system. If you start in one of the later waves, you will be running into the warmer middle of the day, so a sunny December day is a reason to start a little slower, not to hold a pace you set for a cold one. Check the forecast two days out and adjust then.
How should you handle race week and race morning?
Keep race week quiet and familiar. Pick up your bib early at the expo so Saturday is not spent on your feet, eat foods you have tested, and rehearse race morning on a long run: same breakfast, same timing before the start, same gels at the drink station spacing you will actually meet.
Sleep will probably be worse than usual on Saturday night, and that is fine, because the nights earlier in race week carry more weight than the one before the start, so protect Tuesday to Friday. If you want a framework for the days after a poor night, see how to decide whether to train after bad sleep.
FitWoody is an iOS app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch that turns your watch data into a clear read on how your body is doing. For a marathon block, the useful parts today are cardiac load, which scores each run by what it cost you internally, training load tracked against your own baseline so you can watch the taper happen, custom heart rate zones, and recovery baselines built from HRV, resting heart rate and sleep. Flyover replays a run along its route with your heart rate and pace, so you can see exactly where a long run started to drift. An Apple Watch is required, and it informs rather than diagnoses.
Valencia rewards patience more than bravery. Run the first half like you have a secret, and the second half will tell you whether you kept it.
Frequently asked questions
When is the 2026 Valencia Marathon?
The 2026 Valencia Marathon is on Sunday, December 6, 2026, according to the race regulations. The first wave starts at 8:15 a.m. and the last of nine waves at 9:35 a.m. Bibs are collected only at the expo on the three days before the race, not on race morning.
What is the time limit for the Valencia Marathon?
The 2026 regulations set a maximum of 5 hours 30 minutes, counted from when you cross the start line. There is also an intermediate cut-off: runners reaching kilometer 25 after 12:57 p.m. have to leave the course.
Is the Valencia Marathon course really flat?
Yes. The organizers describe it as completely flat and at sea level, which is why so many runners target a personal best there. The flip side is that there are no hills to slow an overambitious start, so even pacing matters more than on a rolling course.
