Your Baseline Beats Any Normal HRV Range

A heart rate variability value that is perfectly healthy for one person can be a warning sign for another, and the charts that sort HRV by age and sex explain far less than they look like they do. Almost everything useful in recovery tracking comes from comparing you to you.

What does a normal HRV range actually mean?

Published ranges are real numbers. They are just population statistics. Kubios, which makes HRV analysis software used in research, puts the adult resting range for RMSSD as stretching from below 20 ms to over 70 ms, and other sources extend it further in both directions. That spread is enormous. Landing somewhere inside it tells you very little about how last night went.

The bigger problem is how little of that spread the usual categories explain. The Lifelines Cohort Study, published in Heart Rhythm, analysed HRV in around 149,000 people and found that age and sex together accounted for only about a fifth of the individual differences in HRV. Lifestyle and psychosocial factors added a little on top. The majority of the variation between people stayed unexplained. So a chart promising the normal HRV range for a 38-year-old woman is working from a thin slice of the picture, and you are not the average of that slice.

Why does an average hide the person?

Resting heart rate makes the point even more bluntly. A PLOS ONE study of 92,457 adults reported that a person’s own normal daily resting heart rate can differ from another person’s normal by as much as 70 bpm. In the same study, the median week-to-week fluctuation within a single individual was around 3 bpm.

Put those two figures side by side and the whole argument is there. Between people, the range is vast. Within a person, it is narrow and stable. A 5 bpm rise is statistical dust across a population and genuinely informative in your own history. The same logic applies to HRV, wrist temperature, respiratory rate and blood oxygen: the signal lives in the deviation from your normal, not in the absolute number. That is why resting heart rate trends are worth watching even when every reading sits comfortably inside a textbook range.

What is a personal baseline made of?

A baseline is not one measurement. It is a rolling picture of your recent normal, built from readings taken under conditions you can repeat, which in practice means while you sleep. Overnight, you are not caffeinated, not standing up, not mid-conversation, not about to present something. Controlling the conditions is what makes tomorrow’s number comparable to last Tuesday’s.

Sports science reviews recommend exactly this approach for athletes: use a rolling average rather than single readings, take several measurements a week, and judge each day against that intra-individual baseline instead of a published norm. One night is noise. Seven nights is a signal.

It also takes patience. Most systems need a few weeks of your data before the range means anything, and the range keeps moving after that. Start training seriously, fix your sleep, get older, spend a fortnight at altitude: your baseline shifts with you. That is the point of it, not a flaw.

Why is comparing your HRV to a friend’s meaningless?

Because you are holding two different measuring sticks. Your friend’s 90 ms and your 45 ms are not a leaderboard. Genetics, age, sex, body size, training history, medication, breathing rate, the device on your wrist and the hour of the night all move the raw value. Two people can be equally well recovered with numbers that differ by a factor of two, and the one with the lower number is not losing at anything.

The comparison that does carry information is your 45 ms against your own usual 58 ms, three nights in a row, after a week of short sleep. That is your body saying something specific. Nobody else’s number belongs in that sentence. If you want the mechanism behind it, what HRV actually tells you goes deeper into what the metric is measuring and what it is not.

How do you read above, below and in range?

In range is the boring answer and usually the good one. Your body is doing what it normally does. Train as planned, live your day, do not go looking for meaning that is not there.

Below range for a single night is rarely worth acting on. Alcohol, a late heavy meal, a hard session that afternoon, a short night, the beginning of a cold: any of them can pull a number down for one morning. Below range for three or four days running, especially alongside a resting heart rate creeping up, is worth respecting with an easier session or an earlier bedtime.

Above range is the one people misread. Most of the time it reflects genuine recovery, a deload week, a stretch of good sleep. Occasionally, in heavy training blocks, an unusual jump above baseline shows up next to real fatigue, which is why the number alone never settles the question. If the arrow and how you feel disagree, overreaching vs just tired is the more useful lens than any single reading.

One thing worth saying plainly: none of this diagnoses anything. A baseline describes how your body is trending against its own recent history. If something feels wrong, that is a conversation for a doctor, not for a graph.
