Why does it change before you feel anything?

What actually moves your overnight temperature?

Illness onset is the one everyone thinks of. An immune response often raises overnight temperature before you have named what is wrong, and it usually comes with company: higher resting heart rate, lower HRV, sometimes a slightly raised respiratory rate. Alcohol is the most consistent and most boring cause. Metabolising it generates heat and disrupts the normal overnight temperature drop, which is part of why a few drinks reliably produce a warmer, more fragmented night even when you fall asleep quickly. If you drink in the evening and see a bump, you have found your explanation.

Late or heavy meals do something similar on a smaller scale. Digestion raises heat production, so eating close to bed can nudge the first half of the night upward. Hard evening training does the same thing for the same reason.

For people who menstruate, the cycle is often the largest single influence. Overnight temperature typically sits higher through the luteal phase and drops again around the start of the next period. This is ordinary physiology, not a problem to fix, and it is the main reason a monthly view of your data makes more sense than a weekly one. If you track a cycle, expect a repeating shape rather than a flat line, and read your deviations against the same phase last month.

Then there is the environment, which is responsible for far more “worrying” nights than anything internal. A hot bedroom, a heavier duvet, a partner, a pet, a heatwave, sleeping in a hotel. Before assuming your body is doing something, check whether your room was.

How many nights before a change means something?

One night is noise. Two nights is still probably noise. Three or more nights drifting in the same direction, especially with a plausible story attached, is worth acting on. The reason is simple: the measurement has real night-to-night variability, and so does your life. Any single reading contains a mix of signal and the fact that you slept badly, ate late, and left the window shut.
