Your watch gave last night a 58. You woke before the alarm, you feel clear-headed, and the number reads like a verdict on a night you rather enjoyed. So which one is wrong?

Usually neither. A sleep score and your morning are measuring two different things, and they were never guaranteed to agree. The score summarises how long and how continuously you slept. How you feel is that night plus the hour you happen to be awake in, plus your mood, plus whatever the day is asking of you.

So which is right, the score or how you feel?

On a single morning, go with how you feel. Being rested is the outcome a score is trying to estimate in the first place, and every score carries measurement error it never shows you.

Over weeks the ranking flips. Your sense of your own sleep is noisy and forgetful. You will not remember that nine of the last fourteen nights were short, and the data will. Use the score for trends and your body for today.

What is a sleep score actually built from?

Scores differ between apps, but the ingredients rarely do: how long you slept, how long it took you to fall asleep, how much of the night you spent awake afterwards, and how the rest was divided between stages. Here is the part that surprises people. A 2024 study using at-home EEG headbands asked which of those measures actually predicted how participants rated their own night the next morning, comparing each person against themselves rather than against other people. Sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, total sleep time and sleep efficiency all predicted the rating. The number of awakenings and the EEG power associated with deep sleep did not.

That is worth reading twice, because it inverts the usual advice. The variable people fixate on, deep sleep, was not the one that tracked how good the night felt. Continuity was. There are four reasons a good morning and a bad score come apart, and only one of them means something is actually wrong.

You are rating the first hour, not the night

Sleep inertia is the fog between waking and functioning, and it lasts longer than most people assume. In a controlled study of how it fades, subjective alertness and cognitive performance both recovered along a curve that took two to four hours to flatten out, with time constants of roughly 40 minutes for alertness and 70 minutes for performance. If you judge your night in the first ten minutes, you are mostly measuring sleep inertia.

The same study found that the sleep stage you woke from did not meaningfully change how bad the inertia was, and neither did getting up, eating or turning the lights on. A rough start, on its own, does not tell you the night was rough.

Your read on the night moves for reasons the night did not

A seven-day study of 41 people with insomnia symptoms compared nightly actigraphy against how each person described that same night. On average they underestimated their total sleep by about 7 percent, and overestimated how long they took to fall asleep by roughly half an hour. What predicted the underestimation was not the sleep itself: it was pre-sleep mental activity and low mood on waking.

More than half the variation in the total-sleep gap, and over 80 percent of the variation in the falling-asleep gap, happened within individuals rather than between them. The same person misjudges their own sleep differently from one night to the next. That sample had insomnia symptoms, so the size of the gap will not transfer straight to a good sleeper, but the direction is worth knowing.

The score is graded against you, and you moved

Most scores are relative. When a score is measured against your own baseline rather than a generic normal range, a run of unusually good nights quietly raises the bar, and an ordinary night after that scores lower without being any worse. That is the system working as intended. It just reads as a contradiction on the morning it happens.

Sometimes the measurement was simply off

Wrist devices infer sleep from movement and pulse. Lying still and calm with a book looks a lot like light sleep from the outside, and a restless partner or a dog on the duvet can add wake minutes you never experienced. One odd night of data is not evidence of an odd night.

This cuts both ways, and mostly in one direction. Wrist devices are better at recognising sleep than at recognising quiet wakefulness, so brief awakenings tend to get absorbed into the night and a broken night can score better than it felt. If your score looks generous next to a morning you barely survived, that is usually the likelier explanation.

When does the score deserve the benefit of the doubt?

Feeling fine is not the same as being recovered, and chronic short sleep is unusually easy to adapt to subjectively. Give the number more weight when it disagrees with you several nights in a row, when it drifts in the same direction as your resting heart rate trend, and when whatever you are about to do is genuinely demanding.

The direction of the disagreement matters too. Consistently feeling worse than the score suggests is a different problem from consistently feeling better, and it is the one worth taking further. Sleep that does not refresh you despite looking unremarkable on paper is something clinicians want to hear about, particularly alongside loud snoring or breathing pauses someone else has noticed. What to do with a mismatch

Log it rather than resolve it. Write the morning feeling next to the score for a fortnight, and you will usually find one of three things: the score runs pessimistic for you, your mornings run optimistic, or the two agree and last week was just a bad week.

Do not rewrite the plan on one number. If the score is poor and you feel good, train as planned and let the session be the judge. If the score is poor and you feel it too, that is when adjusting the session after a bad night earns its place.

And if checking the score has started to make you sleep worse, stop checking for a while. There is a clinical name for that now. A 2017 case series coined orthosomnia for patients who came in seeking treatment for sleep problems their trackers had reported, and who kept believing the device even after laboratory sleep studies came back normal. A tracker is a thermometer, not a verdict.
